Optional Subject In UPSC CSE Exam

Importance of Optional Subject in UPSC CSE

The optional subject is a crucial component of the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). While the General Studies (GS) papers are mandatory for all candidates, the optional subject allows candidates to choose a specific area of study that aligns with their interests, academic background, and strengths. Here are some reasons why the optional subject is important in UPSC CSE:

Scoring Potential:  The marks obtained in the optional subject contribute significantly to the total score. Therefore, choosing an optional subject that allows for better performance can positively impact your overall ranking.
  • Personalization of Exam Strategy:
  • The optional subject provides an opportunity for candidates to tailor their exam strategy based on their strengths and weaknesses. It allows you to play to your academic background or areas of expertise.
  • Interest and Motivation: Selecting an optional subject that genuinely interests you can keep you motivated throughout the preparation process. A genuine interest in the subject matter can make studying more enjoyable and productive.
Depth of Knowledge:  The optional subject allows candidates to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a specific area, showcasing their expertise in a particular field. This can set candidates apart in the interview and contribute to their overall personality assessment.

    • Scoring Balance: Choosing an optional subject that complements the GS papers can help in achieving a balanced score. Some optional subjects may overlap with GS, making it easier to prepare for both simultaneously.

    • Subject-Specific Skills: Mastering an optional subject enhances your analytical and problem-solving skills in that particular domain. This can be beneficial not only for the exam but also in your future career, especially if your optional subject aligns with your chosen career path.

    • Answer Writing Practice: Preparing for the optional subject involves a significant amount of answer writing practice. This is valuable not only for the optional paper but also for the GS papers, improving overall writing and articulation skills.

  • Interview Performance: A strong command of the optional subject can be advantageous in the UPSC interview. Interviewers often ask questions related to the optional subject to assess the depth of a candidate's knowledge and understanding.

  • Flexibility in Selection: UPSC offers a wide range of optional subjects, allowing candidates to choose from various disciplines. This flexibility enables candidates to select a subject that aligns with their educational background and interests.Subject-Specific Guidance: If coaching is available for your chosen optional subject, it can provide valuable guidance and resources. Expert guidance can help you navigate the syllabus efficiently and improve your overall preparation.

In summary, the optional subject is not just a means to earn marks but an opportunity to showcase your expertise, personalize your exam strategy, and demonstrate a deep understanding of a specific field. Choosing the right optional subject is a strategic decision that can significantly impact your success in the UPSC CSE.

Optional v/s GS: Which is More Advantageous?

The UPSC CSE necessitates careful consideration when deciding on the right optional subject. This is because the potential for earning higher marks is greater in the optional subject than in the General Studies (GS) Mains exam or any other category:
    • While the GS Mains exam carries a weightage of 1000 marks, the average marks of a GS Mains topper over the last two to three years range from 475 to 525, which is only 50% of the total marks of GS Mains.
    • In contrast, top scorers in optional subjects often receive marks ranging from 350-370 out of 500, which is over 70% of the total marks possible.
    • Therefore, although the weightage of the optional subject exam is less than that of the GS Mains, the potential for achieving higher marks is much greater in the optional exam than in the GS Mains exam.

How to choose an optional subject for UPSC

Choosing the right optional subject for the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Exam is a crucial decision that can significantly impact your overall performance. Here are some tips to help you select the most suitable optional subject:

  • Interest and Background: Choose a subject that you are genuinely interested in and have a background in. This could be your academic discipline or a subject you've studied extensively.

  • Scoring Potential: Look at the scoring trends of optional subjects in the past few years. Some subjects have a reputation for being more scoring than others. However, keep in mind that the level of difficulty can vary, and scoring depends on your preparation.Study Material Availability: Check if there is ample and good-quality study material available for the optional subject. Access to resources, books, and study materials is crucial for effective preparation.Coaching and Guidance: Consider whether coaching is available for the subject you are interested in. Having access to guidance from experts can be beneficial, especially if the subject is not part of your academic background.
  • Syllabus and Overlap: Analyze the syllabus of the optional subjects. Some subjects may have overlapping content with the General Studies papers, which can be an advantage in terms of preparation.

  • Subject Difficulty and Time Commitment: Assess the difficulty level of the optional subject and the time it would take for you to prepare. If you have a full-time job or other responsibilities, choose a subject that allows for efficient time management.

    • Scoring Consistency: Look for subjects that have a consistent and predictable pattern in terms of scoring. Some subjects may have more subjective evaluation criteria, leading to unpredictable scores.

    • Optional Subject Performance: Reflect on your performance in the optional subject at the graduation level. If you performed well, it might be an indication that you have a natural aptitude for the subject.
    • Interest in Other Papers: Consider whether the optional subject aligns with the other papers in the UPSC exam. A subject that complements your strengths can enhance your overall performance.
    • Review Previous Year Question Papers: Analyze the previous year's question papers for the optional subjects you are considering. This will give you an idea of the pattern, question types, and the depth of knowledge required.
Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, and the best optional subject for you depends on your individual strengths, interests, and background. Take the time to thoroughly research and evaluate your options before making a decision.
