GS Paper- 2 ; Take-away : A BIG CONCERN for India
In the shadowy world of espionage, intelligence and covert operations, the only rule is to never get caught carrying out a mission.
Dark shadow on New Delhi’s credibility in terms of both covert capacity and public messaging, which must be addressed.
Many recent events one after another-“attempted kidnap” of businessman-on-the-run Mehul Choksi from Antigua; the conviction of eight former Indian naval officers in Qatar for espionage;
Latest allegations — by the U.S. of a conspiracy to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York - All this raise some serious question on Indian intelligence/espionage/covert operations even if these allegations don’t turn out to be true.
Lack of trust between indo-US relations can be seen- Later is not in a mood to consider any intel provided by Indian for Khalistanis.
By rejecting Canadian allegations outright, expelling diplomats and suspending visas, while accepting the U.S.’s allegations more calmly and setting up a high-level inquiry to investigate them, New Delhi has demonstrated a double standard in its international engagements.
Double standard from the West-publicly shaming India over the alleged claims on Mr. Pannun and Nijjar, and all Five Eye nations including New Zealand have issued statements criticising India for its actions against Canada.(“Five Eyes” intelligence partnership (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S.)
Such recurring narratives can make India lose its trust among its neighbours as well-which must be a big concern for New Delhi.
